- Fantastic VALUE for money! - Dewald, 5 May 2016
I've had quite a few PowerColor cards over the years... 7850, 270, 280X as well as 290. As usual, this card offers amazing value for money. It is extremely well constructed, a pleasure to look at and the performance... it is just amazing. It comes overclocked out of the box, but I've managed to push the card to overclock easily with another 100Mhz. Running various benchmarks, I have yet to see the GPU temperature go above 65'C and this is with the fans running at between 50% to 60%!! I am amazed! I had a GTX 970 not too long ago which I had to get rid of for various reasons, and so when it came to the time to get a new GPU I was lured back to the Red Team by this beast. My 3DMark scores are all higher than with the Green card.
As always, thanks for the great service Wootware! - Great Service, Very Happy - Alistair, 15 January 2016
Very pleased with my purchase of this card, a few things I just wanted to add:
It’s a beast and will play all modern titles, it was a significant upgrade from my 270x BUT it is extremely hot! I removed my case window and with a mild overclock of just 65mhz in an air-conditioned room I was seeing temperatures @75 degrees but when gaming you barely even care especially @ 1080p since it easily pushes out 60fps on 70% load
- Turn v sync off and I was seeing 100 average FPS in Ryse: Son of Rome.
- When playing GTA V I was seeing a solid 60 FPS with almost everything maxed out with the exception of the advanced graphics options which don’t make the game better looking but do have a drastic hit on the game.
- In Just Cause 3 I did see drops into the 40s at some points but I think that’s due to poor optimization, since my 270x could max out Just Cause 3 and would stutter due to the VRAM getting used up.
-
Overall I am very pleased with my purchase however I would recommend a GTX 980 instead of this card as it is not as hot, or I would suggest waiting for FinFET Polaris to be released sometime this year.
- Absolutely Amazing Card and Service - Craig , 18 December 2015
I purchased this card from Wootware and it has truly exceeded my expectations. This card is my 3rd Powercolor card (all purchased from Wootware) with my previous set up being two HD 7950s in crossfire. Both those cards were well-constructed and performed admirably.
Now, on to this beast, Powercolor have really stepped things up in terms of the construction and cooling on their latest series of cards. First off, this card is massive, with the huge cooling shroud taking up 2.5 slots. The triple fan array is top quality, with little to no perceptible coil whine. The smart fan technology keeps all fans off during times with a low GPU load and during intense gaming my temps never exceeded 65 degrees C. The shroud is constructed with plastic and metal, aiding heat dissipation. Furthermore, the full metal back plate looks incredible, with R9 390 inscribed on it in white paint. The back plate brings stability and rigidity to the PCB, resulting in a bulky card that doesn't sag or bend at all. Not to mention the added bonus of the back plate providing passive cooling for the memory and VRM of the card.
Let's talk performance. This card is ideal for 1080P gaming and beyond, the 8GB frame buffer will handle the latest game's memory needs up to 4K, or provide a degree of "future-proof" performance for 1080P and 2K gaming set-ups. This card has immense grunt and raw performance, in synthetic benchmarks it surpasses the GTX970, with discrepancies in in-game performance a result of most game developers siding with the green team and using nVidia's Gameworks technology. However, as we speak, AMD are overhauling their drivers, driver release schedule and have created GPUOpen, their own open-source game development technology, thus the times are changing and AMD's future is extremely bright. At 1080P, I play The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 at Ultra with all the post processing goodness maxed out (Barring nVidia "Hairworks" and HBAO+, as they are nVidia features) and I get in excess of 60FPS with my i5 3570K (4,3 GHz).
In conclusion, this card was a no-brainer for me. Despite my slight bias as a team red fanatic, this card, in terms of price to performance and frames per dollar is a hands-down winner. That, in conjunction with the mammoth frame buffer, means that this card will remain competitive for a long time. You won't find a better card for under R6000, hell, not even under R7000. Powercolor have truly made something special here. And, as always, the service from Wootware was utterly incredible, my order was processed half an hour after I made my payment and I could collect my card. They are truly the kings of South African e-tailers, offering world-class service and the most competitive prices.
