Absolutely great router, I've always had a stable, reliable Wi-Fi connection at all times.
I stay in a two bedroom flat, and always have a strong signal.
The free router app really helps with seeing who is on my network, and I can see how much data devices are using as well.

I bought the AC55U because the ads and specs claimed it provided up to 30% better throughput on a 2.4GHz link. I suppose it can happen in a lab, but in the real world ? No, it doesn't.
Its not bad , I suppose . Just average to slightly below average. If you want 802.11ac and the router is on special offer, it may be a good buy. Otherwise, opt for TPLink
I've done a direct comparison of my old TPLink WD-8970 router and the Asus DSL-AC55U. The WD-8970 only supports wireless N , therefore I haven't evaluated 801.11ac performance.
I've referenced a lot of reviews and all the reviews have the same flaw: They only evaluate the wireless performance and ignore DSL transfer rate completely. Some guru's claim that the DSL part is so standardised, all modems/routers are the same. I tested this claim and, sadly, this is not true. Considering that the wireless performance means nothing if the primary link to the internet is slow, I tested the claim and listed the result below.
The AC55U averages a DSL line speed 0f 3.4Mbps whereas the TPLink averages 4.2Mbps over the same line. I repeated the test 3 times to eliminate the possibility that it may be due to load or time factors. This represents a 20% improvement on line speed by using an (old) WD-8970 TPlink. Definitely not a compliment to Asus.
Wireless-N performance. Despite the 4 aerials and claims of "up to 30% faster" due to "AI Radar /beam forming", I was disappointed . The AC55U delivers 58Mbps wireless transfer rate over a 10meter(about 30 feet) distance. Nothing to write home about. The TPlink does the same. So...not worse , but not better. Apparently "AI radar" is just another marketing gimmick.
Wireless is distance dependent , therefore I repeated the test at a distance of 1 meter, fully expecting to hit the wireless-N advertised speed of up to 300Mbps....but only got 155Mbps. (The lesson learnt : "Divide the advertised speeds by half . That way you won't be disappointed too badly)
Note:
A wireless test at 1 meter is in any case ridiculously impractical because its a lot easier to use a physical cable... and get 10 times the transfer rate.
The Asus does support 801.11ac. The specs claim a throughtput of 867Mbps... I'll give them the benefit of the doubt till I've tested it.
The bottom line:
DSL performance is 20% slower than the TPlink WD-8970 over the same physical line.
Wireless-N transfer rates are comparable with the TPlink over the same distance, but not better.
The TP-link is a lot cheaper. if you don't need 802.11ac transfer rates, buy the WD-8970.
