- What Jack said - Peter, 20 January 2018
I agree with everything he said. This is one of the best investments you can make in your setup when coming from a mechanical disk. I switched my laptop drive to this 3 years ago right after it came out and I use it extremely heavily. It's an absolute dream and it's still going strong after 15TB of writes. Love it.
- Reigns Supreme over HDD - Jack, 2 November 2017
This is my first SSD and I will never go without a SSD again. This is best component I have ever bought for a PC.
I bought the 850 EVO specifically because Samsung's nand flash is considered to be some of the best in the business and selected the 500gb version in order to have sufficient space for my OS + additional software and some of my "main" games seeing that games these days are easily 20gb+. According to literature and such on the internet a larger capacity SSD is also better for longevity...
The improvement over HDD is tremendous. The various booting/restarting/loading timing videos on Youtube don't really relay just how fast SSD is IRL. My PC is snappier and more responsive. Installing/updating software + restarting is a joy.
An aspect I noticed for myself which I haven't heard or seen on the web is that, where a HDD to me seems to become 'bogged down' and take even longer when having to load multiple programs, its as if this SSD can read from and load multiple programs at the same time. The effect of this is the moment I get to my desktop (within about 20seconds after pressing the power button) I can start opening programs like HWmonitor, Steam, Chrome, Outlook etc without any noticeable lag even whilst startup programs are still loading in the background. I could never do this with my mainstream HDD's caviar blues and greens. Speaking of startup programs, I haven't even bothered with msconfig. There is also a "rapid mode" which I haven't bothered trying out either for reasons mentioned above.
Like I mentioned above, I installed some of my favourite most played games on the SSD but only those which have too long loading times for my tastes, otherwise I'm not going to waste any of the cells. FPS and such did not improve, only loading times. I've found that my HDD has also become a bit faster now that it's only a data drive.
Some other points, there is no SATA cable in the box so make sure you have an extra or get one. I haven't had any issues with temps as my SSD is installed in cage directly behind the front case fan and I haven't seen temps higher than 30c according to HWMonitor. All the software etc for this SSD is on a Samsung website. The software also gives a write counter if you want to follow the remaining TB's. Build quality appears to be topnotch - no blemishes or defects on the exterior. So far flawless operation.
This SSD has breathed new life into my PC. If you have an 'older' system and it feels 'slow', taking ages to boot and what what and you are thinking to yourself you need to upgrade your CPU, its probably just a HDD bottleneck. 500gb may seem a bit pricey considering you can get a couple of terrabytes worth of HDD, but the overall improvement over HDD definitely made this a worthwhile purchase in my book.
