- A Linux Alternative - Kelvin, 31 January 2020
Variant: 16Gb Memory, 500Gb NVME, no Windows.
Installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. All the hardware works with linux, even UEFI.
Using as a development workstation. I get 6hrs on battery using Intel graphics. After tweaking power usage with 'tlp', will last a 10hr work day. Using the nvidia drivers though, brings this time down to about 3hrs. It should be noted, for linux, there's no perceptible difference in performance between intel and nvidia graphics, for non-3D related usage.
Otherwise, great small form factor laptop with enough power to do most things. Performs better than a macbook pro, for less than a 3rd of the price. Keyboard isn't amazing, but you get used to it quite quickly. The F-keys are on by default, which means you need to hold Fn + F-key to use the alternative laptops specific hardware function. Which is my preferred behaviour. Trackpad works great. Ordered 2 power adapters, to leave in office and at home, so all I need is to close laptop and leave. - Exceeds my expectaions x10 - Dylan, 23 December 2019
I normally hesitate and look at all my options when buying computer parts and so on, but from the second i saw this laptop i knew i wouldn't find a better one for the price. I had very high expectations for the laptop but it still managed to exceed those expectations. The 500GB NVMe drive is amazing and outperforms my desktop on startup by having a 3-4 sec BIOS time, which is faster than any laptop i have used. I opted for the one without windows so i had to install all the drivers myself and i can tell you it couldn't be easier. Wootware sent an email with 14 steps to follow to install the drivers and each step correlated to a shortcut provided in a +- 2,2 GB downloadable file. I am very happy with the laptop and would recommend it to any light to medium users who just want a fast functioning laptop.
- Solid laptop - Tim, 11 December 2019
There is no laptop you can buy in ZA that is better for the price. The webcam is a bit of a potato but everything else is great!
- The perfect laptop for those who genuinely care about the hardware they buy - Dylan, 2 December 2019
This is the perfect laptop for those who genuinely care about the hardware they buy. I take value knowing it's fully magnesium alloy body won't cause motherboard flex and that the RAM and storage aren't soldered down and are easy to access. There is so much to talk about that saying it all is difficult, but I'll try.
The display is gorgeous, with amazing colour reproduction, viewing angles, brightness and clarity. The fact it's anti-reflective helps a lot with the sun or other bright light sources.
Ports, oh sweet ports! An ultrabook that doesn't need a bloody dongle to add back features. Even gigabit Ethernet is available, which is unheard of in this laptop category and massively appreciated for us IT folks. Only small gripe is the lack of SD Card/Micro SD Card slots, but since I've rarely used them in general on other laptops it isn't a deal breaker for me personally. If you do need that, then you'll have to get...
*sighs
a dongle.
The keyboard is great to type on, though you need to learn it as you do any keyboard. Backlight has 2 brightness levels, and it turns off after a few seconds of keyboard inactivity. I don't know if there is a way to keep it on indefinitely. There is some delay before the backlight turns on again once you begin typing, but nothing major. Also, thanks to the raised key design, it should be easier to keep the area between the keys clean with a brush.
CPU performance is fantastic, as is the GPU. It's not a gaming powerhouse, but it certainly is better than most rivals that don't even include dedicated graphics. The MX250 used here is the 25w version, but it's paired with 2GB of VRAM instead of the 4GB usually used with the 25w version. IT'S NOT THE 10w PART. Run GPU-Z and you'll see for yourself.
Battery life so far is also excellent, but this all depends on your workload. I've gotten so far a good 6 hours on battery alone, but this was whilst I was installing programs, updates and configuring Windows in general. The system was being taxed so I can imagine that it will be way better when doing more lighter work.
Overall, this is a day worth celebrating. I've got a laptop for the next heaven knows how long, that won't frustrate me or prevent me from completing any of my tasks. I'm so happy that Wootware is offering genuinely incredible hardware options in a country where the big OEMs are king and even ODMs like Clevo and Tongfang aren't given much thought. This is at the same level as any big name manufacturer, if not higher.
I can't recommend this product enough, just wish I owned it sooner. - Great laptops at an amazing price - JP, 26 November 2019
Bought my woot book 2 weeks ago and I’m in love with it. Wootware has great support and it was quick and easy buying it. Have no issues whatsoever and the laptop runs great with lots of performance. So happy, great job Wootware!!
- Feels fantastic & Value for money - Darryn, 26 September 2019
Not a huge buyer of laptops, so can't compare this too much other than my work laptop (MacBook Pro, which isn't fair), but it definitely feels fantastic & value for money. Will definitely recommend this for others. Go WootWare!
Only "downside" would be the audio quality, that could be bumped up a slight bit. Doesn't have as much depth as I would like. - Performance for the price is outstanding - Shaun, 13 September 2019
I ordered the laptop and it was available for collection within one day. Also the performance for the price is outstanding.
- Looks and feels incredibly premium - Gregory, 12 September 2019
For the price, there is nothing better that I can find. I got to pick the exact config I wanted, it arrived promptly with everything set up correctly. It looks and feels incredibly premium and I'm looking forward to the years of productivity I'm sure ill be able to get from this.
- Best In Price Range Competitor - Stephanus, 15 August 2019
I was doing quite a bit of research before deciding to buy this laptop including comparing Dell and Asus models with similar specs with an option to import them. I finally settled on this as for its price to specs comparison there was no better option even in the US. I had the idea that due to its high specs the build quality would be mediocre. When I first unboxed the latop I was in shock at the stability and just how polished it actually was. From the thin bezelled screen to the keyboard that types like a dream, the metal lid. Once I had it up and running I was even more surprised to find just how good the screen looks and the quality of the speakers. Thinking that it cant be possible after watching so many reviews of other laptops and seeing some of the ways that companies skimp on quality to improve price I went further and setup a couple of stress tests because well if the build is amazing and the components are amazing then the cooling system must be flawed right? Nothing can be this good. Once again I was proven wrong. After a few tweaks I was able to stabilize near 3ghz on full 8 thread 100% cpu usage before installing the Game Center software that allows turning the fans to max. To put this into perspective. I use a dell gaming laptop as a developer with a 7700HQ and have for about 2 years. And this laptop would give that a run for its money coming close to its performance at a fraction of the size and weight with a much bettter screen, keyboard, and just overall build and design.
I have no doubts that this laptop would be a strong competitor for even the most well know models in its class from companies such as HP, Dell and Asus and even knock them off their pedastals for value per price.
This would put this product in my mind - Great battery life and ultra-portability - William, 15 August 2019
I'm basically loving everything about my new WootBook, from the lightweight design, the FHD display and the speed of the SSD, to the great battery life and ultra-portability. If I have to give some constructive criticism, though, I would address the build quality - just one or two gripes. Firstly, the feeling of the trackpad isn't great, because the sensitivity and accuracy of the pointer on the screen is not truly reflected by the movement on the pad. Secondly, one or two keys on the keyboard seem to be a little 'loose', as in, if I tap them very lightly (without actually pressing the key) there seems to play quite a bit of play. If I compare this to my old Lenovo keyboard, I have never experienced this over the 5 years I've been using it. The 'Capslock' and 'Tab' keys seem to have the most play. But I must reiterate, these are just little things I've noticed, certainly not deal-breakers by any stretch of the imagination.
- Great value - David, 13 August 2019
Excellent value for money with performance on-par with a lot of the significantly pricier competitors. The lack of a logo on the physical design is a welcome change but would have preferred the same treatment to the startup UEFI image. Other than that, the USB slots were a little stiff but should get better with time.
Can run multiple Virtual Machines comfortable so it is great for developers. Overall an excellent buy, would recommend to anybody looking for a work laptop with good battery life. - Slim and light - Alex, 5 August 2019
I was looking for a slim and light laptop that didn't skimp to much on performance and this filled that role perfectly. It has a nice servicable finish without any annoying embellishments. Best of all was that some degree of customisation was given with ram and hard drive. South Africa is sorely lacking in customisable laptop vendors and I hope Wootware leans into this aspect with the wootbook series going forward.
