- Obligatory review - Inus, 18 December 2023
My review STATE for this hard DRIVE is a SOLID four stars.
I didn't have a spare mounting screw, so I had to buy one for R20 from this other PC shop.
(Crazy/Mental if you get what I'm saying)
Wootware is the best.
Good price. Friendly staff. - Mushkin MKNSSDHL1TB-D8 Helix-L 1TB NVMe M.2 (2280) PCIe 3.0 x4 Solid State Drive - Oliver, 16 August 2023
this soild state drive is perfect for gaming and having my operating system on so that everything runs fast and smoothly, without this i would be struggling with my hhd 500gig that would really annoy me, but with all things aside this is a great product to recommend
- Second review 2 years later - Jacques, 19 June 2023
Still using the same drive I bought in 2021. Still going strong. CrystalDiskInfo says it is 99% good today 19 June 2023.
Eskom power failures caused it to lose some integrity a couple of times, auto disk repair fixed it quickly. Never lost 1 bit of data I could notice.
Heated up to 54 degrees Celsius during summer months. Stuck two small heatsinks intended to cool transistors to the processor and put in a dedicated 12V silent micro fan and now temperature never exceeds 45 degrees. Cost me about R30 for the cooling but the SSD is happy. - nvme ssd - Herman, 10 January 2023
I am extremely happy with this product. Thanks Wootware for great advise.
- Solid performer - Ivan, 5 October 2022
Very happy with the drive, performs as expected. With the only performance issue I have had with it being random 4k read performance sitting at 70MB/s.
- Getting what is stands for - Francois, 5 May 2022
Performing according to specs
- Meh - Adam, 7 April 2022
Running this on a x570s Elite and having endless problems which after various tests I'm assuming has to with compatibility. Seems to be a hit and miss M.2.
- Unreliable - Ruan, 9 February 2022
I bought 2 of these about 2 and a half years ago. One of them died a year ago and the other just died now. Luckily Wootware replaced the first one. Hopefully they'll replace the second one too. In the future I'll rather stick with other brands when it comes to storage.
- 2nd Mushkin Drive - Tiisetso, 20 December 2021
I would buy a 3rd if I needed one, this is a good drive and Mushkin has yet to disappoint me.
I've had a Pilot-E model in the desktop since 2019, many Windows installs and more than a few Distro Hops, still running well. I expect this to be as reliable. - Best value for money - Gerrit, 15 December 2021
Installed in Wootbook Pro III, as second M.2 drive, worked as expected.
Compared to some other brands, the read/write speeds and IOPS are in the lead, as well as reasonable MTBF. - Good SSD for price - Carl, 10 December 2021
The drive performs well enough for its price.
Of course this is not a premium drive so don’t expect that kind of performance.
I pushed it quite hard with over 500gb of game downloads directly one after the other and it did get fairly hot but not bad enough to raise concerns.
I also stress tested its performance with rapid accessing and it faltered a bit there which I kind of expected.
Again, for its price its good enough so far. Whether it will last as long as its listed rating I cannot attest to at this moment.
- Good for the price - Niel-Robèrt, 8 December 2021
Cannot give it 5 stars as I have not been using it for long. Overall so far, quality is good, temps are good. Fast and so far reliable. Never used Mushkin products before but have been hearing good things about it, so I can recommend it definitely.
- Great product - Jacques, 25 October 2021
I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a reliable SSD. Very happy with it. Temperature, without heat sink, runs around 41~44 degrees Celsius in a well ventilated case, acceptable.
Bought this device with some trepidation, manufacturer unknown to me, online reviews of the product average. Glad to say my programs and data had survived multiple power failures ESKOM induced and other, and this while I was intensively using the PC. Never had any integrity loss anywhere, boots up normal every time. I have been using the product with daily backups, nice to return to monthly backups. I trust this disk now. - Highly Recommended - Nicholas, 4 October 2021
This M.2 is great and very affordable, highly recommended.
Has amazing read and write speeds - Great performance - Kobus, 4 October 2021
Bought 2 Mushkin 1TB NVME's Even without heatsinks these drives stay relatively cool with enough airflow. Heatsink from Asrock Z590 keeps it quite cool, really impressed with my builds. everythin was build and switched on working the first time, No Issues
- Fast, super fast - Reinhard, 2 October 2021
My first M.2, did not realise what a difference it makes. Blows my SATA SSD out of the water, boot times feel instant. Perfect for a large steam library
- Mushkin MKNSSDHL1TB-D8 Helix-L 1TB M.2 (2280) PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive - Samalan, 27 August 2021
Is extremely fast, not much of a looker but you get what you pay for. Front sticker may be upside down depending on motherboard , something to keep in mind if you care about aesthetics.
- Lives up to specs - Johan, 13 August 2021
Ran a bit hot on the bench marking, but got the following stats:
2400MB/s sequential read
1600MB/s sequential write
IOPS Read: 180k
IOPS Write: 230k
Idle temp around 35 degrees Celsius.
No complaints. Great product can recommend. - Mushkin review - Andre, 16 July 2021
Already have one of these in my desktop and it works as well as one would expect :D
No issues with it in the couple of months I've had my desktop. Works with Linux (no surprise, drives and especially SSD drives should just work).
hdparm output => cached reads = 14155.18 MB/sec, buffered disk reads: 941.16 MB/sec - Worth it - Wynand, 7 July 2021
was bit skeptical buying this make.
but works as expected. only got it to loads Ark Survival Evolved on, loads in, in 5min with 17 mods - Awesome - Marcel, 29 June 2021
Absolutely amazing can't even compare to normal ssd.
- Laptop Memory upgrade - Marco, 10 June 2021
So far only been using the M2 chip for a week in laptop but there was no problems with getting product from Wootware. The deliver was quick and follow up I have no problem with. I am a happy customer
- Might not be the fastest NWMe.. - Dehan, 25 May 2021
..but after loading Warzone and Battlefield 4 on it, my life has changed.
No more going to down to make coffee and read the Huisgenoot while my game loads in (stored on a mechanical drive previously).
So far, it's solid and I have no complaints / regrets. - Super Happy - Schalk, 12 March 2021
Thank you guys for the good and fast service.
Fast reply's and friendly staff
1 day Delivery really impressed with you guys.
Highly Recommend
Can not go wrong with buying from WootWare - Great product, Great price - Morne, 25 February 2021
Great product for the price, very happy with the product and service delivered by Wootware
- Well priced - Barry, 1 February 2021
Working great as an external drive for my machine and running OS off it via USB 3. Have not noticed lag, in fact seems faster than my internal spindle drive
- Ey, that's pretty good.. - Gustav, 23 January 2021
Great performance and capacity for the price. Very happy with product and service!
- Great value and performance for the price - Donovan, 5 January 2021
This nvme ssd is much faster than a conventional ssd even though there is no dedicated DRAM. Given the price, unbeatable value! So far game loading times have not been an issue and even on par with my more expensive nvme ssd.
- Good drive - John-Paul , 17 December 2020
So far, so good. The performance of this drive is generally as specified and my laptop starts up at lightning speed in comparison with my previous SSD. Although not the fastest on the market, this is great value for money.
- Super fast, and big enough - Roy, 19 November 2020
I recently purchased a SSD hard drivew ith my Wootbook, and I am very happy with it. The drive is really quick, and the size is perfect for me. Plus the price was great
- Unreliable product - Phindulo, 18 October 2020
Advise you check the reviews on Amazon, this is very unreliable. Waste of money imo.
- Wow what a difference! - Rudi, 11 August 2020
I have been using an NMVE for some time and love how fast it is, but it was a sata variation. I recently grabbed one of these PCI-E versions, and wow, 2-3X faster than my regular NMVE ssd!! Stoked!
- Great low-cost NVMe - Faux_Grey, 21 June 2019
The best low-cost storage you can get for those laptops/SFF desktops where you only have a M.2 slot open.
If you are simply looking to "archive" data to a drive then this is perfect, and you get some good performance from the flash chips (until they start reaching capacity!)
I would like to compare this drive to the 1TB Mushkin Pilot which is also available at wootware (MKNSSDPL1TB-D8)
In comparison this Helix drive is using the cheaper SM2263XT controller which does not use a DRAM cache on the SSD but will use SLC write emulation to give good performance if there is capacity open on the drive. (still faster than SATA SSDs!)
The other, Pilot drive includes 2Gb of DRAM cache, improving response times on writing data, but also using more power and making more heat, rather put this in a laptop with good ventilation.
Ideally you cant' go wrong with either of the two drives, but I would spend the extra few hundred rand on getting the Pilot drive for most gaming systems, and would recommend the Helix drive for low power office notebooks or anything needing "cold" storage.
