I never OC my CPUs but always get the K or X variants because binning is a thing - I have a 3570K CPU that performs as well as it did new. If you want to save R500 then get the non-X version - it won't make much of a difference to your life and you can save the money. You could OC the 3600 to the stock speeds of the X version without an issue. That said, I love this CPU and have zero buyer's remorse. Really amazing value!

Best value for the extra Mhz, heatsink and overclock. My idea was budget-enough 5 year plan. A buuld that could last and compete for a few years. This was the best I could hope for. The best of this product is the dynamic boost based on temperature. The boost feature on this really keep your PC running snappy and responsive

I say 2019 coz I dunno what awaits this year. Anyway, I grabbed my 3600X from another supplier coz Wootware were out of stock (nothing uncommon for their Ryzens).
The 3600X is an excellent balance between budget and horsepower. It has an STR (Single Thread Rating) close to any of Intel's 9900 series at ~1/2 the price. While it only has 6 cores, it's hyper-threaded (12 threads total), and very few -- if any -- games use more than 6 threads anyway (or at least, let me say "benefit from more than 6 threads). An Intel 9600 only has 6 cores and no hyper-threading and is ~40% more.
It gives you great video encoding: I get up to 10.1x speed on a straight Xvid --> h264/5 transcode.
Does some amazing software rendering (not to be confused with integrated graphics, it does _not_ have integrated graphics, you'll need your video card).
Finally, and this impressed me, it doesn't need an after-market cooler (unless you OC it, which it doesn't need). The stock cooler is very quiet and highly efficient. Within about 2 seconds of pushing it to ~90% load on every core for a good 10 minutes, the CPU is already cooled enough that the case fans are making more noise than the cooler. Oh, and during that test, there was zero heating, thus zero throttling.
One word to the wise: The stock cooler comes with the paste pre-applied and nothing properly covering it. I opened it, heatsink fell out, I caught it, and dust & fingerprints stuck to it. I had to clean it and apply my own thermal compound. Long gone are the days of that little square bag of paste when you bought a CPU with stock cooler. Anyway, take care unpacking it.
